Background
Our client, a manufacturer with a Shopify store serving both B2B and B2C customers, relied on three main channels (sales referrals, landing pages, and campaigns)—each demanding distinct customer engagement.
Yet, they were manually tagging every new customer based on the source, leading to frequent errors and missed opportunities to segment offers properly.
They had the data but not the streamlined process to put it to work.
The Problem
Shopify does store valuable metadata—like where a visitor came from—but it doesn’t automatically apply tags.
That meant staff had to do it themselves, one customer at a time.
Our primary goal: remove these repetitive steps by creating a system that tags customers on the fly, according to their inbound channel.
Implementation
Leveraging Shopify Flow, we built an automated tagging workflow:
- Trigger events on new customer creation or order completion
- Use conditional logic to differentiate B2B vs. B2C or separate channel-based offers
- Enable optional tag removal or updates as needed to keep data accurate
All of this takes place natively within Shopify’s admin interface.
No third-party apps, minimal Liquid changes, and effectively no-code for the client.
Outcome
- Zero tag errors thanks to fully automated logic
- Clear separation of B2B and B2C workflows, including distinct pricing and post-sale follow-ups
- Fine-tuned campaigns become easier to deploy (like LP-only discounts) because the right tags are always in place
- Less time wasted on manual data entry, more time devoted to core business activities (like product development and customer relations)
Reusability & Perspective
Tagging might seem minor, but it’s central to effective marketing segmentation and support.
With Shopify Flow, you can scale segmentation without custom code or convoluted integrations.
Spend less time double-checking details, and more time delivering value to your customers.
Final Thought
Ever worry, “Did we tag that customer correctly?” or “Did the LP offer actually get applied?”
With automated tagging, you don’t have to anymore.
Ask yourself: What repetitive tasks are we handling that a simple rule could automate?
Sometimes, the best work is the work you never have to do yourself.
Let’s help you make that a reality—beginning with the tags you’ve always wanted to trust.
